Brooklyn
Here's a list of our favorite Brooklyn to-dos. We hope you get a chance to explore our 'hood!
- Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain
- Mac & Cheese and Egg Creams (which don't actually contain egg). Just like an old soda fountain — vintage vibe, family friendly, cute shop up front.
- Brucie
- Witty Italian farm to table fare with a backyard. Excellent A-frame chalkboard wordsmithing. Fresh made pasta.
- Buddy's Burritos
- Need a quick burrito fix? Super Veggie or Gourmet are our go to. If you're really hungry go for the El Grande (so big, they make it with two tortillas). Make sure to ask for your buritto grilled.
- Calexico
- Crack sauce — get it on anything you order. Jalapeno cheddar grits round out a burrito into a full meal. Worth the walk to Columbia Waterfront District (don't believe their Red Hook labeling) to dine in their Day of the Dead lair.
- Mile End
- In addition to being the benefactor of Pop-Up Shabbat with their awesome event space/kitchen in Red Hook, Mile End also serves up delicious plates piled high with smoked meat inspired by Montreal style Jewish delis.
- Strong Place
- Great beer selection with a nice backyard. The lamb burger is great, but when we go, sharing the small plates (and perhaps some oysters) is the way to order.
- Petite Crevette
- BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) French seafood place. Don't be deterred by the BQE right outside its door, the inside is super cute and a great spot for a fresh and delicious meal. Fun fact! We ended up here with about a dozen Hurricane Sandy stowaways the night after the storm.
- Brooklyn Roasting Company
- Even though Danya and Andrew can only handle one cup o' Joe a day, Andrew's family hails from Seattle the coffee capital, and there's no shortage of little ones on both sides of our families. So, we figured we had to put at least one coffee spot on the list.
- Cafe Pedlar
- Our neighborhood coffee spot. They make a great latte, and always have a great selection of pastries. Grab a bisket with butter and jam and take it over to Cobble Hill Park.
- Mocha Bagels
-
- Jalapeno cheddar bagel, toasted with sun dried tomato cream cheese
- Plain bagel, jalapeno cheddar cream cheese, egg and cheese, tomato
- Blueberry bagel, toasted with butter
- Sesame bagel, garlic and herb or dill cream cheese, cucumbers
- Brooklyn Inn
- Danya may or may not have ordered Domino's here. Otherwise, it's a classy neighborhood institution, laying claim to being the oldest bar in Brooklyn.
- Congress
- A somewhat recent addition to the neighborhood, Congress is the only cool bar on Court Street (at least as far as we're willing to walk). We've both celebrated our birthdays here — perhaps because it's within the delivery radius of Calexico.
- Lavender Lake
- A great bar with and awesome backyard (which, despite it's proximity to the Gowanus Canal, is lovely!). They've got a great selection of cocktails and snacks (try the brussel sprouts and the mussels).
- Brooklyn Bridge Park
- Our favorite park in NYC and home to the kayaking program Andrew helps run. Beautiful views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, as well as the Manhattan skyline. Danya and Andrew have watched this park transform from a construction site into one of the best parks in the city. Go hungry and be sure to check out Fornino (pizza on Pier 6) and Ample Hills Creamery (ice cream by Pier 5).
- Pau Hana
- Cute Hawaiian themed salon across the street from our place — Danya's new place for getting her nails done.
- Brooklyn Strategist
- Huge selection of board games for sale, or you can rent them by the hour and play in their backroom.
- A Cook's Companion
- Our go to place for kitchen essentials and goodies!
